2024 Chevrolet Traverse

SCHEDULE A TEST DRIVE

Overview

Big, bold, and rugged, the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse has come a long way since it first debuted about 15 years ago as the first SUV crossover of its kind. Fans of the Traverse will recognize that this 2024 third-generation edition harkens to its big brother, the Chevrolet Tahoe, in its exterior design, with the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse boasting a taller front end, prominent grille, quad exhaust, and signature lighting found on vehicles up the line. With up to 328 hp and 5,000 lb. towing capacity, Chevrolet is focusing on capability for its updated family-sized SUV. Added to its lineup for 2024 is an off-road-centric trim, the rugged and ready Z71 that features a standard twin-clutch differential in the rear. The 2024 Traverse is also available in the base LS trim, the mid-range RT, and the popular top-of-the-line RS, which also undergoes some re-imagining for the 2024 model year, including enhancements to the RT's sporty good looks and a tweaked suspension that should deliver a more dynamic ride.

Who's It For?

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse is big on roominess, so those families that have outgrown a 5-passenger compact SUV may find the Traverse fits the bill with its passenger capacity of 7 or 8, depending on seat configuration. Larger families and those with a lot to haul will appreciate the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse's roomy interior, with plenty of room for cargo and excellent storage. To maximize passenger seating, buyers should opt for the base LS trim, which offers seating for eight in three rows, while the other trims offer room for 7 due to captain chairs in the second row reducing passenger capacity.

While the returning RS trim remains a favorite of Traverse fans, those looking for some off-road adventure may want to look to the new rugged Z71 trim, with features like a slightly wider track and more ground clearance, suspension, and dampers with hydraulic rebound control, and sporty black 18-in. all-terrain tires.

What's New for 2024?

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse offers both obvious and subtle updates. Chevrolet is unveiling a new turbocharged 2.5-liter I-4 engine that packs 315 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. that is more high-performing and efficient than its previous engine, which provided just 310 horsepower with a 3.6-liter V-6. On the outside, Traverse's more rugged good looks for 2024. With its latest edition, the Chevrolet Traverse sports a taller front end and a bold new grille. The rear exterior was designed to provide more presence, while the quad exhaust is standard regardless of trim.

New to the lineup, the Z71's off-road persona is more than skin-deep. In addition to its front fascia treatment and other sporty features, the Z71 has suspension and dampers sporting hydraulic rebound control, giving this SUV ample ground clearance when combined with its 18-inch all-terrain tires.

All-wheel drive is optional on all Traverse trims but the Z71 stands apart with a standard twin-clutch differential in the rear. It is the game changer, providing the traction and torque distribution needed off-road. Changes in the Traverse's overall height, length, and width change just slightly for the latest year, accommodating new tire options of up to 22 inches. Other proportions and dimensions also change slightly, particularly overhangs on the Z71, giving it greater ground clearance.

Real World Performance

All trim levels of the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse come with the same new-for-2024 turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and eight-speed automatic transmission, with choice of either all-wheel or front-wheel drive. With up to 328 horsepower and 326 pound-ft of torque, Chevrolet is setting the 2024 Traverse up as a more-than-capable SUV, whether hitting the highway, city streets, or—in the case of the Z71—even more rugged terrain.

Standard on the Z71 and optional on other trims, the 2024 Traverse's towing package can haul up to 5,000 lbs. Speaking of the Z71, buyers dreaming of an off-road experience will want to check out this all-terrain trim option, new for 2024. In addition to the rugged Z71, owners have favored the top-of-the-line RS trim, prized for its flashy looks and great handling. This year's version raises the stakes with a brand-new front fascia and redesigned, larger 22-in. high-gloss aluminum wheels that combine with the flat-bottom steering wheel to add to its overall sporty look. The RS trim's suspension is fine-tuned to provide an enjoyable, more dynamic ride.
